Märt Vähi
Founder, Bishop
Märt and Alta Vähi married in 1970 and have three children and now eight beloved grandchildren.
In 1991, during the collapse of the Soviet Union, sensing God's calling, Märt and Alta moved with their entire family to Estonia — to the place where, before World War II, Märt's father's home had been. As war refugees, his parents reached Sweden in 1945, and the family later relocated to Canada.
Canada became their home and the country where they raised their family, but in the 1970s they spent seven years smuggling Bibles into Estonia and other Soviet Union countries. After that they returned to Canada, where Märt founded the Smythe Street Church in Fredericton, New Brunswick, serving there for fourteen years as pastor, dean, and as state chaplain in the provincial government.
After settling in Estonia, Märt Vähi was actively involved in the founding of the Estonian Christian Pentecostal Church (EKNK), establishing new congregations, founding a Bible school and starting its educational work, and together with colleagues he established the Estonian prison ministry. In 2005, Märt Vähi was consecrated as Bishop of the Estonian Christian Pentecostal Church. All of this work continues to this day.
In November 2000, under Märt Vähi's leadership and initiative, the NGO Village of Hope was founded, and soon practical construction of the Village of Hope began, along with work with alcohol and drug addicts. As chairman of the board of the NGO Village of Hope, Märt Vähi directs the rehabilitation center's activities and development, and as bishop emeritus of EKNK he leads the EKNK Village of Hope Congregation. Märt Vähi is also one of the founders of the NGO Village of Hope Rescue Society.
Märt Vähi's work has received many recognitions in the field of social work. In February 2014, the President of the Republic of Estonia honored Bishop Vähi with the Order of the Red Cross, 3rd Class.
Together with his son Andrew Vähi, Märt began establishing and developing the Village of Hope in Canada in 2006, where the first houses have now been built and the first men are going through the program.
Alta has been her husband's faithful companion throughout life. She also serves continuously at the Village of Hope, showing great love, care and attentiveness. In her quiet way, Alta always takes part in welcoming and hosting guests, in catering, in worship services, in organizing events, and in teaching young people. The doors of the Vähi home are always open to guests.
